[jira] [Updated] (ARTEMIS-1505) NPE prevents browsing queue with
large messages
[ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/ARTEMIS-1505?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel ]
Weston Bustraan updated ARTEMIS-1505:
-------------------------------------
Description:
If a message is sent to a queue that exceeds the {{minLargeMessageSize}}, attempts to call {{browse()}} in JMX will fail with a NullPointerException. This is particularly problematic when paired with the Artemis HawtIO plugin, because its incomplete error handling appears to swallow the error. No error is displayed and it appears that the queue is empty when you attempt to browse it, despite the "Message count" attribute being non-zero.

h6. Steps to reproduce
# Start Artemis broker
# Create test queue
# Use core-client or jms-client to put a large message on the queue. Message should be greater than {{minLargeMessageSize}}
# Connect to JMX
#* I used VisualVM
#* JConsole can connect as well
#* In HawtIO, the error appears to be suppressed, but it is visible it you invoke the method directly via Jolokia
# Navigate to MBean for test queue
# Invoke the {{browse()}} operation
# The operation will throw a NullPointerException
h6. Analysis
It appears that for large messages, it uses the {{org.apache.activemq.artemis.core.persistence.impl.journal.LargeServerMessageImpl}} subclass of {{org.apache.activemq.artemis.core.message.impl.CoreMessage}}. The {{CoreMessage.buffer}} field is apparently not initialized anywhere before being referenced in {{CoreMessage.encode()}}, causing it to throw a NullPointerException.
This issue seems to have been introduced through changes related to ARTEMIS-1009
was:
