1.6.17 release rolling next week (May 11)

Hi all,

There have a been a couple of user-requested fixes nominated or
backported to 1.6.17, and there are several pending fixes. So let's
fire up the release machine and target a roll of 1.6.17 for May 11,
next week.

I'll be traveling that day, but should have enough time to cut the
release. It's also the week before the elego hackathon in Berlin, but
I don't see that as a problem.

Still planning on rolling this release. There hasn't been much merged
to 1.6.x (as evidenced by the latest commit to CHANGES), but STATUS
has the usual suspects.

Please review and vote, or tell me to can this plan. :)

Not hearing any objections, I plan on going forward with this plan.
