httpd.conf fouled up

Well, let's see.
I got apache in and it was perfect. Then I had to have someone else install
frontpage extensions and he is well, it IS Memorial Day Weekend. I was
talked into...no, I was blackmailed into having apache on my RH7.2 box
somewhere other than /usr/local/apache. I can't find root with a roadmap
now.

I am standing here beside myself.

Now, tequila sunrise is messing with my vision. Look at the
bicity.net-error_log;
[Fri May 24 19:15:14 2002] [error] [client 209.192.59.22] File does not
exist: /www/html/bicity.net/

(The shame is overwhelming.)

>From httpd.conf;

<VirtualHost *>
	ServerAdmin pm@mysp.net
	documentRoot /var/www/html/bicity.net
	ServerName bicity.net
	ErrorLog /logs/bicity.net-error_log
	customLog logs/bicity.net-access_log common
</VirtualHost>

More? (This feels like a 12 step program.)

In /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf; (I can't believe I'm telling this to
strangers.)

ServerRoot "/etc/httpd"

ServerName scotty.bicity.net (Did I mention, "I've never done anything like
this before?)

DocumentRoot "/var/www/html" (If the nice people next door find out...no: I
can't think about it.)

When I try to get there with...yes, IE... (I don't care. IE was good to me
when no one else cared!)
...never mind. I can't talk about it. Try it yourself. bicity.net.

I need help. I'm desperate. What if the press gets ahold of this????

If you see the problem, I'd really appreciate a clue.

Thanks, & have a Great Memorial Day Weekend,

Urgent help needed

Posted by Yaman Kumar <ya...@nous.soft.net>.
Hi
I'm having very hard time in configuring Tomcat4.0.4 and Apache
2.0.36/1.3.24 on Windows 2000 to bring my application running up with
apache..

I have not found correct documentation in any of the sites about
configuring these two. I failed to bring these together.

Can any one help me?

TIA,
rayaku

bicity.net
bicitymall.com

(Or are you asking the path to the index.html file?)

Each has an alias in tinydns for www.

Actually, I have a thought or two. (I know it's generally foolish to
question the directions from someone that knows what they are doing but,
it's easy for me to think out of the box since I cannot even find the box.)

I have several httpd.conf files and some backups; Likewise for various error
files and access files.
I was wondering how to prove up first which httpd.conf file is being used.
Then the same for a error_log file. At some point a trend might develop.

I was thinking of posting a msg to a frontpage list.

Now that one is scary. However, I have a backup of my original installation.
(/usr/local/apache as you suggested 5/5) I didn't back it up so, I can't
back it up now to reinstall the original. I wonder if copying with F5 in
Midnight Commander would do that. I'll check to see if if gets all the
subdirectories.

RPM? This will be way too complicated if I don't explain.
I have a box beside me running a drive taken from scotty.bicity.net where
the Apache was installed as part of the process of installing RH7.2 server.
It runs but is not connected to internet. I have it here for information to
diagnose problems.
The system (linux RH7.2, apache and qmail) was reinstalled because apache
was not in /usr/local/apache. Apache worked as did qmail and everything else
except FrontPage.
On scotty, before FP was installed by Kevin, everything worked including
virtual hosting. This is backed up on the current drive.

So let me see here...I have a backed-up copy of my install where things
worked. But, since I do not really understand where the current install is,
I cannot backup the current one and use the previous one.

I realize that was complicated. I presented it in a way I thought would
convey all the info.

When I did this before, it did not work out. That's why I gave up & got
someone else familiar with FP to do it.

My final solution may be to stick another drive in scotty and install that
(FP98) version.
I will shortly have all the files posted at 36867.tripod.com.
If you feel that any of the above is a waste, let me know.

Thanks,
Bill

Bill --
Good morning? I hope you haven't stayed up all night working on this?

Here's what you I would do.

1. Post news messages to list, subject: Frontpage extension: Seg fault?
Inlcuding summary and error messages.

2.Cross post same message tp Redhat mailing list.

3. uninstall apache (last one installed by rpm) and frontpage extensions.

4. reinstall apache from rpm, and test without FPE.
(a) Check install paths
(b) test basic install
(c) then if that works add virtualhost and test.

5. download FPE from here (both *.tgz and RPM):
(a) http://www.rtr.com/fpsupport/
(b) the docs will be easer to find in the *.tgz
(c) install either version according docs

Here's a howto found on google:
http://www.itma.lu/howto/apache/

Post followup messages to as reply to new postings listed above.

RE: httpd.conf fouled up

Posted by Billy <my...@phenixcable.net>.
The previous post from me lends credence to the rumor that I was found under
a rock.

On the other hand, every time I try to access a page on the server, I get
this error message in

/etc/httpd/logs/error_log;

[Sun May 26 07:52:50 2002] [notice] child pid 19315 exit signal Segmentation
fault (11)

It is all one line and the number after pid changes each time an access is
attempted.

The # is an httpd process.

What does this mean?

Thanks,
Bill

So there is a:
/var/www/html/index.html or index.html.var, apache logo, etc.?

But as long as you have a virtual host defined In don't believe
you see it.

It must be gremlins!
There are a few questions and obserevations below. IF you spot something I'd
like to know.
In the meantime, I'm going to add another virtual domain that's already in
dns. I'll then addit to FP and see if that gets any new clues.

Thanks for your help,
Bill

DocumentRoot "/var/www/html"
If I go to /var/www/html I should find an index file there.
The index file is there. (0644) frontpage/frontpage.

What does apache make the default server root and document root if it is set
up from an rpm?

Here is a line from /var/log/httpd/bicity.net-error_log;

[Sat May 25 17:09:35 2002] [error] [client 216.47.228.4] File does not
exist: /var/www/html/bicity.net/scripts/..%2f../winnt/system32/cmd.exe
(Is that your ip?)

Here's a line from /var/log/httpd/error_log;
[Sat May 25 21:34:55 2002] [notice] SIGHUP received. Attempting to restart
[Sat May 25 21:34:56 2002] [notice] Apache/1.3.23 (Unix) (Red-Hat/Linux)
mod_ssl/2.8.7 OpenSSL/0.9.6b PHP/4.0.6 FrontPage/5.0.2.2510 configured --
resuming normal operations
[Sat May 25 21:34:56 2002] [notice] suEXEC mechanism enabled (wrapper:
/usr/sbin/suexec)
[Sat May 25 21:34:56 2002] [notice] Accept mutex: sysvsem (Default: sysvsem)
[Sat May 25 21:35:02 2002] [notice] child pid 12460 exit signal Segmentation
fault (11)
[Sat May 25 21:35:17 2002] [notice] child pid 12461 exit signal Segmentation
fault (11)

Line above keeps repeating about 10 more times.

RE: httpd.conf fouled up

Posted by David Jackson <da...@pickledbeans.com>.
Let's get back to the basics

In /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf:
Comment out:
NameVirtualHost *

and comment out <VirtualHost></VirtualHost> for bincity.net

apachectl configtest
apachectl restart

You do have bincity.net defined somewhere in /etc/hosts or DNS don't you?

Yes. But, it was done backwards 1.3.24, then 1.3.23. I facilitated
installation of the FrontPage Server Extensions. I had to accept the rpm
installation or do it myself. In the past two weeks, I installed linux (I've
done it a dozen times), djbdns twice, qmail twice, apache twice, and
vpopmail once. It wore me out. I got the opportunity to have someone else
install the FPSE with .rpm...and I smiled graciously. I would have
accepted voodoo and scorpions.

With the help you gave me, I'll have the real domains on this weekend.

httpd.conf says put the index file at /var/www/html and I did. I also have a
directory there /bicity.net with an index file. You would thing a test page
would come up.

Nada! Zero. H-m-m-m.
I wonder if graceful isn't cutting the mustard?

A curiosity with FPSE? The virtual container points to a directory with an
index file. (I'm going to try with and without a trailing / in httpd.conf.
I am heading for the error logs. That should point to where the file is not
found.

I hope that isn't the problem. If it is, the FPSE will be out the window for
a while.

o you see anything I am missing?

Bill

RE: httpd.conf fouled up

Based on httpd -V
> 36867.tripod.com/httpdV.html

Here's what the setup for apache-1.3.23? Didn't someone install 1.3.24:

Apache home:
/etc/httpd
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
/etc/httpd/conf/access.conf
/etc/httpd.conf/conf/srm.conf

Redhat put all log under /var/log (some use /var/adm):
/var/log/httpd/access_log
/var/log/httpd/error_log

Now take a gander at /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
see where DocumentRoot is That's where you top level index.html should be.
Then check <VirtualHost> </VirtualHost> section near the end, and see if
this is httpd.conf you have bincity.net is defined in?

If your expecting apache-1.3.24 than you need "rename" the current apachectl
(just in case) and copy or link the apache_1.3.24/bin/apachectl to
/sbin/apachctl.

Stop the presses !!! I think I found what you're looking for:

In /sbin/apachectl check path to httpd:

Run /path/httpd -V you should see something like this:

dabean:root >> bin/httpd -V
Server version: Apache/1.3.24 (Unix)
Server built: Apr 21 2002 14:27:18
Server's Module Magic Number: 19990320:11
Server compiled with....
 -D HAVE_MMAP
 -D HAVE_SHMGET
 -D USE_SHMGET_SCOREBOARD
 -D USE_MMAP_FILES
 -D HAVE_FCNTL_SERIALIZED_ACCEPT

Mine says conf for some because everythings installed
under /usr/local/www

Then take a look at httpd.conf? For DocumentRoot and
see if thats the httpd.conf you have you virutal host
set up in.

OK. A new file is there - output from httpd -V

Now. I will read some of this.

The first thing I noticed is apachectl indicated httpd is /usr/sbin.
Next, the server version is 1.3.23

I'll see if this is right before looking in httpd.conf for where the correct
index should be hiding.

Thanks,
Bill

Oh, Man. Spoiler! I had figured that out. No, really. I decided what my
helper would have done. Since FrontPage patches (and recompiles?) apache it
would almost certainly end up in /usr/sbin. Because the others I can
reasonably account for.

I am pretty sure the /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf is it from dates and times
of events I observed yesterday...and he told me but, it slipped past. I was
thinking..well, never mind.

Yes, and I have been trying to cover it up to my brain. I have made several
mods to the wrong httpd.conf. When it didn't work, I went looking for what
else could be wrong. So not all the mods are to either file.

By this I think you mean I should get rid of the nonfunctional logs, right?
After the problem is corrected, of course.

I suspect the 1.3.23 is correct. FrontPage is opten a step or several behind
apache. The 1.3.24 was installed by Yours Truly (I put it in
/usr/local/apache after it was untarred to /usr/local/apache-1.3.24. If it
needed to be recompiled, it would have been done with an .rpm for certain.
That, I think would account for the .23 version.

My name is not Billy. I am an imposter. You see, unlearned as Billy is, he
would have figured out that for the apache server with FrontPage extensions,
the domain would probably need to be somehow massaged (or go through the
FrontPage Server Extension Process. He would haveknown that MicroCough had
previously slipped .exe files into linux boxes. (obviously a virus waiting
to blue screen the linux boxes on uh-h-m-m, Blue Monday.)

Yes, there are .exe files on Linux boxes. I had nothing to do with it. It
was not my day to watch out for sneak attacks.

I'll put the httpd.conf at 36867.tripod.com. There, maybe with your help, I
can figure out what directory the index file shoud be in.

Thanks for the help. I've made a real mess. But, hey. Everybody's gotta' be
good at something.

Ok, we're hot on the trail now.

> /usr/sbin/apachectl

You could trying running apachectl with full path to
each install and seeing whch one gives you the install doc root
index.html.

Unless you run apachectl with a full path, you are
using the one in /usr/sbin/apachectl.

apachectl is a shell wrapper for httpd. Take look at it
you should see something like:

# the path to your PID file
PIDFILE=/usr/local/www/logs/httpd.pid
#
# the path to your httpd binary, including options if necessary
HTTPD=/usr/local/www/bin/httpd

These lines should help ID the most recent install paths.

> /usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf

Best guess is one of these to is the real httpd.conf
for "current install"

My quess is you got the virutal host setup in the wrong
httpd.conf and maybe using the wrong document root.

Were talking 1.3.24? Would suggest that, apachectl is pointing
to the wrong conf file?

What this? *.exe on a Linux box?

OK. After intense deliberation with myself I have decided if someone else
(knowing what they are doing) installed frontpager server extensions
(patching apache from an rpm might change lot of things) the apachectl
would remain in the same place at /usr/sbin no matter what. It will matter
not whether the /apache/old or the /apache/bak was MY original (installed at
/usr/local/apache), therefore when I run apachectl it should be from
/usr/sbin. And, in fact, that is where I /apachectl/graceful earlier. So the
output is;

Syntax OK.

(All that concern and I got syntax OK. Talk about anticlimatic!)

You tell me, your on the box? Do the following (as root?):

find / -name httpd.conf
find / -name log -type d
find / -name access_log
find / -name error_log
find / -name apachectl
run:
/path/apachectl configtest
/path/apachectl start|restart

You might have to restart apachectl after makeing changes.
Check that the process is actually running? Look for httpd

ps aux |more

Your going to have 1 - error and access log for the server.
and 1 each for your virutal hosts.
The error_log will give the error messages?

I.E shouldn't a have anything to do with it.
Look in error_logs for messages?
That's the index.html for that VirtualHost only.
Did you test the server before you added the virtualhost?
If not you might want to comment out bincity.net,
restart apache and see if it you can browse to the main
server page.

Did you cut-and-paste this from httpd.conf? if so then changes:
documentRoot -> DocumentRoot
customLog -> CustomLog

And rerun apachectl configtest.

There is an appropriate index file here. However, when I went to the site

Right now there is /var/www/html/bicity.net/index.html. But, of course it
still isn't working.
